ARC 304: THE HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF URBAN FORM
with M. Christine Boyer (Fall 2003)
"How to Construct a Book" (The Koolhaas Operating System)
This project focuses on Rem Koolhaas' Mutations of 2001. Re-purposing the opening essay, "How to Construct a City," and using it as a tool for analyzing Koolhaas's production of books - and, for that matter, his architectural and urban ideologies - this ever-so-small book (4"x3") presents a critique of Koolhaas' facile distortion of urban reality. Drawing heavily on the work of the Situationists, this book uses Koolhaas' own graphic tools (e.g., font, color, and maps) to undermine the Koolhaas Operating System.
